A Reminder That We’re Not Alone

We never assumed this transition would be easy, but our girls truly have one of the hardest jobs right now. Imagine stepping into a school where almost no one speaks your language, in a brand new building, in a brand new city, in a brand new country. That kind of change would challenge any adult, let alone a child.
Last week, the weight of it all became too much for one of our girls. She walked into school with tears in her eyes, overwhelmed and unsure if she could face another day of not fully understanding what was happening around her. Her teacher noticed immediately. Even though the words were in French, our daughter understood the gentle question: “What’s wrong?” She whispered that she was just sad and didn’t feel good. She wasn’t sick, she was simply carrying the heavy load of being new in every possible way. Without hesitation, her teacher wrapped her in a hug and guided her into the classroom.
What happened next still makes my heart full. A few of her classmates quickly stepped in to care for her. One made her a warm cup of tea, another filled a hot water bottle, and someone else brought her a blanket. They didn’t need to share the same language to understand what she needed. They surrounded her with kindness, comfort, and inclusion. By the end of the school day, she came home with a smile, talking about her classmates and even looking forward to returning. Nothing in her situation had changed, yet everything had. She no longer felt so alone.
This simple act of compassion reminded us why we made this move. Yes, the challenges are real and sometimes overwhelming, but the beauty of human connection crosses every language barrier. The warmth and hospitality of French culture showed up in that classroom when our daughter needed it most. And this mama definitely had all the feelings about it. 💛
