Our Journey Navigating the French Education System

September 28, 2025

When we moved from Florida to France, one of our first big hurdles was figuring out school. Our three youngest (ages 5, 11, and 13) were able to start on time in Strasbourg. Adjustments are still ongoing, but little by little they are discovering things they genuinely enjoy about their new classrooms.

For our 11- and 13-year-olds, that has meant discovering classes they would never have back in Florida like woodworking, sewing, and tending the school garden, a refreshing break from the test after test rhythm of the U.S. system. Our 5 year old has gone from clinging to our hands at drop off to smiling at the teachers and giving us a quick hug and wave goodbye.

Our oldest, though, was another story.

The Waiting Game With a Teenager

Getting our 16-year-old into the right lycée (high school) was not simple. Weeks passed while she watched her siblings settle in and we waited for confirmation. The uncertainty was tough on all of us... a new country, a new culture, and no daily structure for her yet.

Finally, the call came: a placement in a great public lycée in Strasbourg, with a strong French language support program to help her integrate while still working toward her long-term goals. The relief was immediate and emotional, not just for her but for our whole family.

Lessons Learned for Other Families

If you are planning a move to France with school-age kids, here is what we wish we had known:

  • Start paperwork early. Bring every official document you can: birth certificates, vaccine records, transcripts, and proof of residence.

  • Expect delays and communicate often. Email, call, and follow up. Responses may be slow, but persistence pays off.

  • Ask about French language support. Many schools offer FLE (Français Langue Étrangère) programs to help non-native speakers catch up.

  • Be patient. Especially with teenagers, the waiting period can feel endless, but trust the system.

Ending the Week With a Win 🏆

Now, seeing all four of our kids walk into school every morning feels huge. It is not just about education; it is about belonging. Each placement means new friends, better French skills, and a sense of normalcy after such a big move.

For any family thinking about making the jump, know this: it is not always smooth, but it is doable. If you are needing help navigating this process, we are here to help!
